David Donovan the Show Secretary of the Yapton and District Cottage Gardeners Society
reported:
A flurry of late entries raised the figure to a respectable 191 from the 27 exhibitors, of whom
three were newcomers, at the autumn flower show of Yapton Cottage Gardeners Society.
The
Village Hall venue staged super sized sunflowers and massive marrows, but wind and rain in days
prior to the event reduced the quality in dahlias and chrysanthemums. However, better things were
seen in the fruit and vegetable classes and the nine entries in the floral arrangement classes were
impressive as a whole and individually.
For the other sections, the domestic judge found a great deal to admire in the cookery
classes, as the wine and beer judge likewise found in his discipline. The photographic classes had
some interesting images and the children's section was boosted by some late entries.
About 100 visitors provided a steady trickle to view the show during the afternoon and
afterwards to purchase winter bedding plants, cakes and to try their luck on the raffle or attend to
light refreshments.
As well as trophies for results on the day, the Autumn Show marked the end of the season
of competition for which further awards were available.
Ken Rippengale had a good day retaining the EDITH GODFREY TROPHY for most points
on the day's successes, entering horticultural, cookery and photographic sections and the VILLAGE
CRIERS TROPHY with another record breaking entry in the horticultural classes during the
seasons four shows. However it was Alan Humphrey who took the DEEGAN SHIELD for the
days best vegetable exhibit of a pair of cauliflowers and both silver and bronze medal certificates of
the NATIONAL DAHLIA SOCIETY with his specialist flower. Society Chairman Roy Phillips,
who made the presentations, gained the JOAN WADDINGTON MEMORIAL VASE for his
fuchsia exhibits at two shows, and Joan Jackson once more retained the W.R.TROPHY for flower
arranging during the year.
Show Secretary, David Donovan, successfully defended the NEIL BAXTER MEMORIAL
TROPHY against all comers in the cookery and craft classes, while the most distant exhibitor to
enter the autumn show. Tony Bishop, won THE FORD WINE CIRCLE CHALLENGE SHIELD to
take to Billingshurst.
Eight year old Katie Van Driel took the JUNIOR AUTUMN CUP for her entries in the
children's classes, but for this season, it was nine year old Joe Nelmes who accepted the JUNIOR
VILLAGE CRIERS CUP with entries in three shows.
The Cottage Gardeners' activities continue with the barn dance on Saturday, October the
23rd, accompanied by the Stove Pipe Band and a talk by a countryside ranger is arranged for
November the 3rd, both items will be held in the Village Hall.
An addendum to the Annual Show is that the charities the SNOWDROP TRUST and
MACMILLAN TRUST were recipients of donations nominated by two child exhibitors who shared
the BELMONT CUP award on August the 14th.
