Press Release

Yapton and District Cottage Gardeners Spring Show Report.

Press release details.

From Yapton Correspondent John Dickeson. 01243 551972.

David Donovan the Show Secretary of the Yapton and District Cottage Gardeners Society reported:
The transformation in the weather from cold to warm in the week before the Yapton and District Cottage Gardeners Spring Flower Show was significant in bringing daffodils into bloom.
As a result, dozens of vases were staged in the Village Hall, many of the finest exhibition quality, providing visual (and olfactory) delights for the devotees of narcissus. The Daffodil classes were supported by other cut flowers and pot plants, and an interesting range of vegetables, notably by some huge leeks.
Man competed with woman in the flower arranging classes, (honours even), and in the cookery section, (only men knew how to make marmalade!). The photographic prints provided a range of interesting images and five children competed in their section, with only the wine and beer classes being disappointing in their small entry figure.
Some 37 exhibitors, many from beyond the confines of the village, provided 197 entries and their results of staging were rewarded by 140 visitors viewing the display during the afternoon. Away from competition, side stalls provided bedding plant and cake sales, raffle and light refreshments. Many memberships were renewed and half- a-dozen households enrolled into the organisation.
Roy Phillips, the Cottage Gardeners' Chairman, brought the proceedings to a close with the trophy presentations. Rustington based Christine Fry quite deservedly won the HARRY MARCH CUP for amassing most points in the horticultural classes; she staged daffodils of the highest exhibition quality. David Donovan, Show Secretary, retained the PRATT TROPHY for cookery in a keenly contested section and 13 year old Emily Courtnage was the most successful child exhibitor to take the JUNIOR SPRING CUP.
The Yapton Cottage Gardener's activities continue with a cookery demonstration by Odette Bery on April the 6th, 7.30 in the Village Hall and the years second plant sale is booked for May the 7th with the Early Summer Show set for June 25th.
